Matrix II

Matrix II
A redesign by Zuzana Licko

Matrix II is a complete reworking of the Matrix type family which was originally designed by Zuzana Licko in 1985. The redesign, which started in January 2007, was initiated by the need to create an OpenType version of Matrix. With the hood open, so to speak, Licko used the opportunity to make subtle changes and to fine tune many of the existing characters which were designed some 20 years ago. The contrast between thick and thin strokes was decreased in some instances, and overshoots were corrected. The width of various characters was adjusted and regularized. The cross stroke on the f was simplified on most weights. The design of the lower case g was revisited and an alternate single story version was designed and added to the OpenType version. Seven new fonts were also added to the family: a Semi Narrow, Semi Wide, Semi Tall, Inline Italic, and 3 weights of Italic - a less flamboyant version of Matrix Script. To clearly set this version apart from the original Matrix, and to avoid conflict with previous versions, its name was amended to Matrix II.

Bringing akzidenz grotesk to the city

Tobias battenberg, from Germany, made a nice experiment with video projections in several buildings and structures in the city, about the font "akzidenz grotesk".
Akzidenz grotesk is known as a font that tolerates a lot, that holds out a lot - my plan was to get a proof by the font herself. the font demonstrated her character at its best.
Very nice, take a look.

This is pretty interesting... Computer generated text, using a digitized manuscript font. The results are great and very beliveable:

FONTSELF is a type project about handwriting and drawn writing.

It provides the ability to create fonts that preserves the gestures of a given handwriting and the original look of the drawing appliance (ball-point pen, pencil, ink, paper, etc.).

The introduction of a new character or even 'just' a punctuation mark is a hard, long and complex process. As every person -who can read or write- has an opinion about language and the use of language, mostly linguistic developments move with the speed of the most conservative writers/readers. Which means, every new proposal will be criticized and most likely won't survive in the end. Most of our currently used characters in the latin alphabet, letters numbers and other characters we use, have a long tradition and history. It's very hard to add a new character which lacks all that history and convention. One of the rare exceptions maybe is the notorious interrobang, invented in the sixties, and now, more than 40 years later, in 2007 natively implemented in Microsofts ClearType font collection.

Commissioned by the CPNB (foundation for the Collective Promotion for the Dutch Book), Underware created an irony character.

PROFILE: Piet Zwart

Piet Zwart (Zaandijk, 28 May 1885 – Wassenaar, 24 September 1977) was a Dutch photographer, typographer, and industrial designer. He started his career as an architect and worked for Jan Wils and Berlage.

As a designer, Zwart was well known because of his work for both the Nederlandse Kabelfabriek Delft (the Dutch Cable Factory in Delft) and the Dutch Postal Telegraph and Telephone, and as a pioneer of modern typography. He did not adhere to traditional typography rules, but used the basic principles of constructivism and "De Stijl" in his commercial work. His work can be recognized by its primary colors, geometrical shapes, repeated word patterns and an early use of photomontage.
He created a total of 275 designs in 10 years for the NKF Company, almost all typographical works. He resigned in 1933 to become an interior, industrial and furniture designer.
Piet Zwart died at the age of 92 in 1977.

Trollbäck + Company creates titles, animates for director Gary HusTwit’s feature film Helvetica

New York-based visual and conceptual creative studio Trollbäck + Company recently worked with veteran producer and first-time director Gary Hustwit on Helvetica, his in-depth look at the proliferation of the ubiquitous typeface, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. With company founder Jakob Trollbäck as associate producer, the feature-length documentary also benefits from titles, animations, and motion graphics from Trollbäck + Company.

“I called Gary and offered to help the very second I heard that he was working on a film about Helvetica,” says Trollbäck, who’s company publicly confessed its devotion to the typeface with www.HelveticaLove.com, a website initially set up as a typographic tongue-in-cheek contribution to the Sex issue of Print magazine. “To me, Helvetica is The Well-tempered Clavier of typefaces. Like all typefaces it can be misused—but there is no denying the effortless beauty of it. It is a brilliant topic for a documentary.”

More than a film about typography, Helvetica looks at the evolution of graphic design and, in turn, global visual culture. An exploration of how urban spaces are organized and identified through design and communication, the film also draws on renowned designers to consider their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type. “This was an amazing project to work on,“ says Emre Veryeri, designer at Trollbäck. “It allowed us to work with design and material by iconic designers and artists, and ultimately it’s an honor that our work is integral to the presentation.”

“We were mainly focusing on titles at first,” says Veryeri. “Eventually, the internal graphics became increasingly vital to the project. We sought, through our animations and graphics, to support the dialogue and make visual connections between the designers’ work.”

The final editing of Helvetica, a production of Swiss Dots in association with Veer, took place at Trollbäck + Company’s studio. This simplified the process and made it very collaborative as Hustwit and editor Shelby Siegel were making their final editorial choices . “It was great working with everyone at Trollbäck + Company on this project,” says Hustwit. “Motion graphics sequences are like mini-narratives that tell a story using type, and the people at T + Co are master storytellers in that sense. They do such amazing work, and it was an honor to have them involved in the film.”

Shot entirely in HD, the film combines footage from the United States, England, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, France, and Belgium. The film premiered this month at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and will continue to screen at film festivals around the world. The sold-out AIGA-sponsored New York screening on Friday, April 6 at the Tishman Auditorium of The New School was followed by a panel with the director and special guests from the film, including associate producer Jakob Trollbäck. April 6 also marked the opening of “50 years of Helvetica”, the MoMa exhibition dedicated entirely to Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffman’s design classic.

“This film will be big for the design community,” says Veryeri. “It’s both thoughtful and thought-provoking and will therefore appeal to the general public as much as to typography and design geeks like us.”

Eric Gill got it wrong; a re-evaluation of Gill Sans

Gill Sans is the Helvetica of England; ubiquitous, utilitarian and yet also quite specific in its ability to point to our notions of time and place. As a graphic designer’s in-joke once put it ‘Q. How do you do British post-war design? A. Set it in Gill Sans and print it in British Racing Green’. As the preferred typeface of British establishments (the Railways, the Church, the BBC and Penguin Books), Gill Sans is part of the British visual heritage just like the Union Jack and the safety pin.

So to pick an argument with something that is akin to a typographic national monument might appear unwise; it is so very much ‘ours’. But it is a flawed masterpiece. How flawed? Well, monumentally flawed, in fact. In 2006, now that Gill Sans is distributed freely with Apple’s OS X and Adobe’s Creative Suite products, it is time to re-examine those flaws. Ever since Gill Sans was incorporated into the Adobe/Linotype library in the early 1990s what used to be Monotype Gill Sans became GillSans. The new compound name and the missing foundry attribution serves to distance today’s users of this type from any awareness that Monotype used to issue Gill Sans in a range of different series with alternate cuts. Readers with experience of metal and phototypesetting may recall this system, but for now, the majority of us only have this ‘bundled’ version of GillSans to go by.

TIME Magazine redesigned

TIME Magazine has been redesigned by Pentagram.

As Stengel says in the editor’s letter in the new issue, “This issue of TIME marks a new beginning. The magazine has a new look and structure. Every issue of TIME tells a larger story about the world we live in, and we wanted to create a design that would best present that story.”

“The magazine has been modernized,” Hayman agrees, “but it still has the TIME ‘DNA.’ We deliberately chose fonts and design elements that echo classic TIME magazine.” During the redesign process, Hayman worked closely with TIME’s in-house team, including Stengel, Hochstein and deputy art directors Cynthia Hoffman and D.W. Pine.

Paula Scher, who collaborated with Hayman on the redesign prototype, explained part of the thought process behind the project. “We created a system that we thought would resonate with today’s readers. It’s full of quick bits and relevant info, but still retains the spirit of TIME. We used the display typeface Franklin Gothic that was part of the history of the magazine, and revisited the grid used by Walter Bernard,” the legendary editorial designer.

The magazine is made from 5 A0 photocopies which are then french-folded and stitched down the spine. the first edition photograped in western-super-mare has been blessed with fluro orange type.
The magazine is a collaboration with Adam Tickle, Alistair Webb and Kristina Grundberg.

Akzidenz Grotesk

Akzidenz Grotesk is a realist sans-serif typeface originally released by the H. Berthold AG type foundry in 1896. Contemporary versions of Akzidenz Grotesk descend from an early-1950s project, directed by Günter Gerhard Lange at Berthold, to enlarge the typeface family, adding a larger character set, but retaining all of the idiosyncrasies of the 1896 face. Some new weights, condensed and extended widths were released under the title Standard. While Günter Gerhard Lange sought to academically retain Akzidenz Grotesk's imperfections, Max Miedinger's 1957 Swiss typeface Helvetica, used it as a model but sought to refine the typeface making it more even and unified. Akzidenz Grotesk also influenced Adrian Frutiger's 1958 typeface Univers. Akzidenz Grotesk is the first sans serif typeface to be widely used.

Akzidenz is sometimes at first glance mistaken for the Helvetica or Univers typefaces. The similarities of Helvetica and Akzidenz are apparent, but the subtle differences include the uppercase and lowercase C, and the uppercase G J, R, and Q:

From Buenos Aires, Argentina, comes a great multi-disciplinary magazine:
Acido Surtido is a publication on art and design distributed for free in the whole country (Argentina). The first issue of Acido Surtido was published in 2001, as an answer to the lack of action and the downhearted feelings that was threatening the national cultural production in those days. Trying to take over collective construction common places, Acido Surtido opens itself to other voices, getting together in order to share. A kind of generosity is underlying: those who offer the place, those who give their work, those who receive it and make its sense. There are some other principles. Avoiding commercialization and production paraphernalia that could make its cooperation spirit strange and move towards massive circulation. Betting on the quality of its contents secretly hoping to achieve fulfillment. In a nut shell: find the difficult balance between a high level publication and a self-produced fanzine.

Our collaborators come from different disciplines, but they are mostly linked to visual arts: designers, photographers, illustrators, fine arts artists. Rodrigo Sanchez Interview

Read this nice interview at SpeakUp with the Art Director of METROPOLI, Rodrigo Sanchez, that recently won a Type Directors Club award.

Rodrigo joined El Mundo in 1992, where he is the Art Director of three of the newspaper’s supplements along with other tasks required by the large publishing group. Since graduating from Universidad Computense de Madrid, Rodrigo has been working in the editorial field: The finance magazine Mercado, was the first job that offered him design control; he then joined El Sol in 1990 where he met legendary editorial designers Roger Black and Eduardo Danilo (of Danilo Black) whom he credits for opening his mind (and doors) to editorial design of the highest quality. For the last 15 years Rodrigo has been producing covers for Metrópoli that defy normal design routines and display a wonderful range of visual executions that range from the expected to the short-of-breath-magnificent.

Snoil - A Physical Display Based on Ferrofluid

Snoil, a sensitive skin of oil, is a great interactive piece by Martin Frey.

Ferrofluid is a liquid that reacts to magnetism. It is attracted by magnets, pretty similar to iron. This can lead to areas where the liquid partly resists to gravitation when a magnet approaches. Thereby a small bump is formed close to the loadstone. This behavior is enabled by magnetic nano-particles that are suspended in a carrier fluid. Normally the particles are coated with a surfactant to prevent their agglomeration. This results in stable ferrofluid dispersions.

Snake + Oil = SnOil

There are different reasons, why an interesting application for the ferrofluid-display is based on the game Snake: the food pieces are shaped out of the surrounding fluid and are instantly converted to the snakes body after consumption. So the growth in length of the snakes tail comes along with a real swelling volume of the collected fluid. The snake on the screen is steered by a joystick or a keyboard whereas the input interface of SnOil relies on a straighter action: The player holds the whole ferrofluid-basin in his hands and controls the flow direction of the snake by slightly tilting in the according direction. The controller measures this by tilt-sensors.

Graphic designer, typographer, letterpress printmaker and teacher, Alan Kitching is internationally renowned for his expressive use of letterpress type, process and materials in creating typographic designs for publishing, advertising and his own limited edition prints and ‘Broadside’ publications.

Born in Darlington, County Durham in 1940, Alan left school aged 14 to become an apprentice compositor with a local printer. In 1961 he moved south to pursue a career in design. New directions were inspired by working as typography instructor under Anthony Froshaug in the Experimental Printing Workshop at the School of Art in Watford College of Technology.

Alan subsequently established his own design practice, taught at the Central School of Art, and was invited by Derek Birdsall to join the Omnific Design Partnership. He became visiting lecturer in typography at the Royal College of Art in 1988 and established his workshops there for students of all disciplines.

In 1989 Kitching decided to return to his letterpress roots and launched The Typography Workshop in Clerkenwell London with the first of his A1 ‘Broadside’ sheets – ‘an occasional publication devoted to the typographic arts’. As well as compositions for corporate identities, magazine and book covers and illustrations, Alan’s work has also featured on postage stamps, theatre posters, shop windows, billboards, signage and a 30 x 15ft typographic mural for the Guardian Newspaper’s London office.

From France, "L’ Alliance pour la Planete" ("Alliance for the Earth"), an association of environmental and social justice groups has a simple message for everyone: sacrifice 5 minutes for the planet. You're asked to join others to switch off all electrical appliances between 19:55 and 20:00 CET on Thursday the 1st of February. (Please do the adjustment for your timezone).
It's not just about saving 5 minutes' worth of electricity, but a symbolic gesture to draw attention to our vast consumption of energy and the urgent need to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Why this date you may ask? Well, because tomorrow the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is due to release what is expected will be the strongest and most grave assessment to date of global warming by the world’s experts.

I specially like the way the letters get represented, like if the Y is saying: "I need to have this form, you know, for my brother E to be OK too..." Isn´t this a very essential part in typography?

An extraordinary history of typeface development, reflecting prevailing limitations or technological advances, lies behind apparently ordinary letters or numbers found on familiar objects. Very few of us are aware of the rich cultural history behind what we read. The 2007 Pentagram Classic Typographic Calendar, designed by Kit Hinrichs, partner of the legendary international multi-disciplinary design consultancy Pentagram, captures the essence of typeface development.

Each calendar month is distinguished by a unique typeface selected by Hinrichs, which is accompanied by a short synopsis of its genesis. His selections include popular and obscure typefaces, whose origins span contemporary (created digitally) to 15th century roots (created using hand-drawn characters) by some of the industry’s acclaimed typographers, as well as those lesser-known. All characters and digits appearing in the calendar have been redrawn digitally.

For instance, “Whitney” (July), designed by Tobias Frere-Jones for the Whitney Museum in New York, was created for the institution in a multitude of applications. The result is a typeface, which successfully tackles the often-conflicting demands across multiple forms of media, from catalogs, directory listings to signage.

Participants engage in artistic research involving content and form, text and image, theory and practice, in relation to professional practice and supervised by leading designers. Alongside more theoretical research, participants work on real assignments for external clients.
With these assignments participants learn to take on a leading role in the process of designing and realizing a final product.
The WT programme roughly consists of three components:
1) Presentations, individual and group critiques, workshops;
2) Practical assignments and
3) theoretical orientation in the form of research, excursions and a final thesis.

Assignments can be initiated by the WT, external clients, or by the participants themselves.

He began working at a phototype manufacturer in Japan where he had to draw hundreds of complex Japanese characters every week. Mexican Blackletter

Mexican Blackletter is a book published by Mark Batty Publisher on the blackletter also known as Gothic miniscule.
Blackletter, known also as Gothic miniscule, originated in Europe near the end of the 12th century. Transported from Europe to the New World, blackletter was subtly reshaped by indigenous influences. No better is this illustrated than in Mexico.

Towards a non linear typography?

EXP - a non profit research team, has a very interesting blog.
They discuss in this article the Aztec writing system:
When we think to writing and printing as visual forms, we always accept the linguistic and alphabetical model of linearity as the basis for organizing syntactically coherent and effective messages. However, this is perhaps the relic of a misconception about what a graphic notation really is – and what can do –, grounded on the idea of a parallel between verbal syntax (which is necessarily unilinear since it follows the flow of time, although no performed speech act is literally linear nor monodimensional) and visual entaxis (which is the distribution in a synoptic space of inscription of features, characters and groups of notational units as tokens, assumed as identical with syntax while in no way has to coincide with it).

You are invited to submit projects for possible inclusion in the Visual Typography feature that will appear in the May/June 2007 issue of Communication Arts.

Submission criteria
We’re looking for design projects where typography is used as the primary visual element. The work must be recent (within the last two years) and should not have been previously shown in one of our annuals or the Exhibit section. There is no cost to submit entries for consideration in the Visual Typography feature.

Submission material
Please submit the actual printed package, digital file or hard copy printout.
Please include a brief description of the project, along with contact information, including an e-mail address. If your project is selected, we will contact you for reproduction materials and complete creative credits.

Submission deadline
Submissions must be received no later than Thursday, February 1, 2007

Brand New

The typography was originally based on Franklin Gothic, over 100 years old and still looking as fresh as a daisy. Strong, solid, clear, no messin’. Then it was a matter of getting it flowing together smoothly, focusing on the shapes of each character and almost morphing them into each other so that it wasn’t just four independent letters but one seamless sculptural piece. This involved a lot of squinting and standing back until it felt right.
This is an example of what you can find at Brand New, a Speak Up spin-off displaying opinions, and focusing on corporate and brand identity work. It is a division of UnderConsideration.
